Papers, 1776-1818.

The collection consists of a folder of material, for the period 1776 to 1818, focusing on Price's repeated attempts to receive compensation for his losses from the U.S. Congress and from private individuals in France. The latter concerns merchants in Nantes who received a shipment of tobacco from Price during the war, failed to issue a receipt, and sold the goods as their own. Price went to France to recover his losses through a lawsuit but was halted when the merchants produced French-Canadians with arrest warrants charging Price with appropriating their goods for the use of the American forces. Several items in the colleciton include correspondence in 1782, with English translations, between the Chevalier de La Luzerne (1741-1791) and the Lord Chancellor of France concerning their desire to help Price, as well as a letter on the same subject from John Holker (1745-1822), Consul-General of France. Of special note is a five-page document, with translation, from the Comte de Vergennes (1717-1787) to King Louis XVI (1754-1793) in 1783 concerning the necessity of extricating James Price from his difficulties through an order prohibiting the Canadians from enforcing their warrant in France. The material relating to Price's dealings with Congress includes a copy of his commission from the Continental Congress in 1776, lists of judgments against him by British-Canadian merchants, and several letters, petitions, and depositions, largely written by government officials, concerning Price's apparently fruitless efforts to secure just compensation. Upon his death, his son, James Price, Jr. ( - ), carried on the effort from 1801 to 1818. The officials represented in this collection are Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), Secretary of War William Eustis (1753-1825), and several congressmen. Also included is a copy of an award of compensation given to a Canadian refugee by President James Madison (1751-1836), a copy of the full financial accounts of James Price with the U.S. Congress, an 1801 newsclipping concerning a new compensation law, and a fourteen-page booklet written by James Price, Jr. in 1817 entitled "A Narrative of my father's Sufferings, Sacrifices, and losses ...," which contains several references to military leaders and tactics during the American invasion of Canada.
